We think this chair from our Used Furniture Showroom needs a makeover and would make a great weekend project. Did you know that you can paint fabric? You can add style to this or any chair without having to reupholster it!
Here is what you need:
- Paint – Acrylic or Chalk
- Spray bottle of water
- Paint brush
- Fabric medium equal to the amount of paint you use (Some tutorials say that it is not necessary, but if you would like the fabric to be softer it is recommended)
- (Optional) Upholstery nails
Step 1: Wipe the chair down to remove all dust and debris.
Step 2: Mix 1 part paint and 1 part fabric medium to create a mixture. (If you choose not the use the fabric medium you can skip this step)
Step 3: Water the paint mixture down so that it is 1 part water, 2 parts paint.
Step 4: Spray the chair with the water bottle to wet the fabric as you go.
Step 5: Paint on two coats of the water/paint mixture and let dry.
Step 6: If you notice any rough sections you can sand them down with fine grit sandpaper.
Step 7: Finish painting the fabric with a coat of 1 part paint/1 part fabric medium mixture (or just paint if you choose not to use the fabric medium). Spray the fabric with water again before you apply a generous coat.
Step 8: Paint or stain any wood legs or arms.
Step 9: (Optional) Use a hammer to add a nail head trim around the arms.
The fabric will feel stiffer than regular fabric, similar to painted canvas, but the finished product will look like you reupholstered the chair!
